![]() Personally, I think this is a strength of the system - you're not going from nobody to Dovahkiin in a single scenario, you're just going from one end of a dungeon to the other. One common complaint is that you feel weaker as a game progresses, rather than stronger. If you play side missions for a couple weeks before coming back to a main quest, it can be hard to remember what's going on, and trying to work it out in retrospect isn't easy either. The links from one scenario to the other are not always as strong or as explicit as you might like. Looking at the more recent missions he's made, his creativity and mission design is really improving. Isaac created more-or-less in the order of play, so there's a period where the missions are lacking in imagination. The missions can start to feel a little samey after the first dozen, as they always seem to have the same objective. The decisions never felt like they had any weight to them. I'd always felt dissatisfied with other RPG-ish boardgames - Descent etc. Some of my group took a few sessions to get into it - once they worked out how the decisions cascaded, they loved it. Retiring characters and bringing new ones into the mix can drastically change the group dynamic, and having to learn a whole new character to play is non-trivial.Īfter our very first game, I was really excited at the possibility space in the game - making a decision now can limit your options 3 or 4 turns from now, so decisions feel weighty and important. The game continues to be interesting and engaging, even as some of our characters become overpowered. We're still playing, occasionally having a break and playing something else. That includes set up, shopping time, character leveling time, road and city event cards, and clean up at the end. In a typical 4 hour game night, we can get through 2 missions at 2p, 1 or 2 at 3p and 1 at 4p. Since getting it in Febraury 2017, My group has played 47 separate missions. I got my copy from the first kickstarter (late pledge, paid $100). It means almost every scenario comes right down to the wire, with victory coming on the very last possible turn. If you're not doing well, everyone is incentivized to focus solely on the main objective. If you're doing really well, everyone will try to spend more time looting or working on their personal goals. That, along with gold and experience not being shared, leads to great moments where one player is perfectly set up to kill some creature, but instead they sprint past to grab a treasure chest or open a door, and everyone else just stares at them, because really?Īlso, from a gameplay standpoint, it almost perfectly balances the game. If you succeed, you get a small bonus, but if you don't, it's not a big deal. Instead, they're things like "Make sure there's a monster on the board at the beginning of every turn", or "Loot at least 5 coins during the scenario". Everyone still definitely benefits most from a successful scenario, so nobody's going to completely betray the group. They're not normally things that make you act that differently.
